The council of Vic unanimously approved the renovation projects for Can Forcada square and Josep Maria Pericas square, with budgets of €300,000 and €135,000 respectively.
The full council meeting of Vic, held on the last Monday of July, gave the final green light to two public space renovation projects: Can Forcada square and Josep Maria Pericas square. Both initiatives were unanimously approved by all municipal groups, as reported by the councillor for Urbanism, Ester Coma.
The intervention in Can Forcada square has a budget of €300,000. Coma explained that in recent months, suggestions made by the CUP and a citizen have been evaluated and incorporated, mainly focused on improving accessibility. The project aims to create a new square in the area that occupied the old building of the Cooperativa Plana de Vic, on Carrer Morgades, and will include garden areas, trees, and resting spaces. A new access to the parking areas of the adjacent buildings will also be enabled, ensuring the safety of the children's playground, which has been open to the public since this week.
The CUP councillor, Quim Soler, expressed satisfaction with the acceptance of several suggestions, such as the removal of pavement in existing pathways or the installation of armrests on benches. However, he lamented that the placement of an informational sign explaining the neighbourhood struggle that prevented the space from becoming flats was not accepted.
Regarding Josep Maria Pericas square, located in the l'Horta Vermella neighbourhood, the renovation amounts to €135,000. Coma noted that the work stems from the previous mandate and has been able to move forward after finding budget. The improvements focus on accessibility, with new pedestrian crossings and access ramps from the street, as well as new pavement for the sidewalks and correction of interior unevenness. The tree pits will also be enlarged to preserve the health of the trees, and urban furniture will be renewed.
The CUP councillor, Arnau Comajoan, highlighted that their suggestions have managed to reduce the space allocated for cars in the Font de Sant Pere and Bac de Roda lanes. However, he regretted that the possibility of allowing swimming in the fountain was not considered, especially given that the square is conceived as a climate refuge.
In the same session, the initial approval of the minor modification number 6 of the Municipal Urban Planning Plan (POUM) was also granted, with votes in favour from all groups and abstention from the CUP. Coma explained that this is to correct small errors detected in the planning, a dozen adjustments in various parts of the city, to facilitate the implementation of the POUM.
Comajoan noted that, after reviewing the modification, almost everything fits, although he expressed doubts about two projects: the modification in Can Baumann and the private passages in the Santa Anna neighbourhood. Coma responded that in Can Baumann, the area of equipment and use is being reconsidered, achieving a space for the neighbourhood and the city, and that the university can have new classrooms.
On the economic side, the council validated the omission of the role of auditor, a necessary technical procedure to pay invoices to the now-dissolved company Vic Verd for bulky waste collection carried out since January. The councillor for Economy, Núria Homs, explained that the administrative situation of the new contract has not been resolved, so the council must approve the payment. The point was unanimously approved. A bonus on the Tax on Constructions, Installations and Works (ICIO) for the Diocese of Vic for the renovation of the interior pavements of the church was also approved.
The renovation works for both squares will be carried out in the coming months, aiming to improve accessibility and the quality of public space for the residents of Vic.
