The Generalitat has activated the alert phase of the special emergency plan for flooding in Catalonia (INUNCAT) on Thursday due to the forecast of heavy storms during the afternoon and night. The weather warning indicates that rainfall may exceed 40 l/m2 in 30 minutes and accumulations of more than 60 l/m2 in three hours across much of the territory.
The regions that may be most affected are those of Central Catalonia, the Pyrenees and the eastern Pre-Pyrenees, the interior of Camp de Tarragona, and the Central Pre-Coastal area. The showers will be accompanied by storms and, locally, violent weather phenomena, with particular attention to very strong gusts of wind and hail.
The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) and the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) have announced that they will intensify monitoring due to the possible rise of rivers and streams, and the impact this may have on flood-prone areas. Civil Protection is asking municipalities to review these points and take preventive measures.
For the public, recommendations include avoiding parking in streams or flood-prone areas and never crossing rivers, streams, or flooded areas, whether on foot or by vehicle. It is also advised to reduce mobility during the heaviest rainfall and stay away from gullies, ravines, and underground passages that may flood.
