The Blood and Tissue Bank has launched its summer campaign to halt the 20% drop in donations. The goal is to reach 40,000 donations between July and August.
The Blood and Tissue Bank has initiated its summer campaign to encourage blood and plasma donation in Catalonia. The organisation warns that, during the months of July and August, the needs of hospitalised patients do not decrease, even though donations fall by around 20%.
With the slogan “This summer, we are fans of giving it all”, the campaign aims to achieve 40,000 donations to keep reserves stable and ensure treatments in Catalan hospitals. The message particularly emphasises the need to increase plasma donations, in addition to blood donations.
Plasma is the liquid part of blood, and it is used to produce haemoderivatives, vital medications for some patients. In Catalonia, more than 3,000 people need medications made from plasma, and over 4,000 receive plasma transfusions each year. However, currently only 39% of the necessary immunoglobulins are obtained.
Plasma donation is a simple process, similar to blood donation, and can be done at almost the same locations. Additionally, it can be donated more frequently: every 15 days, and recovery is quicker, as most of the plasma is water.
To facilitate donations, the Blood Bank has strengthened campaigns in coastal and holiday towns, and will take advantage of local festivals to set up municipal facilities, civic centres or installations such as climate shelters to host donation days.
