The municipality has officially welcomed the five Sahrawi children who will spend the summer in Montcada i Reixac, all of whom are returning for the experience. The reception is part of the Vacances en Pau programme.
Montcada i Reixac celebrated the official reception of the five Sahrawi children who will spend the summer in the municipality this Wednesday, all of whom are returning for the experience. The events began in the morning at the Town Hall, where the mayor, Bartolo Egea, along with the councillors for Cooperation, Dámaris Sánchez, and Childhood, Albert Carandell, welcomed the children and their host families.
In the afternoon, Joan Fuster square hosted a large party with water inflatables and children's workshops, coinciding with the launch of the water games installed in this square in Pla d'en Coll. Municipal representatives wished the children a pleasant stay and thanked the families for their efforts in making this initiative possible.
The five children are repeating the experience: two are doing so for the second time, another two for the third, and one has already spent five years with the same host family. During their stay in Montcada i Reixac, some participate in the summer camp while others have a free pass for the summer pool in the Zona Centre. All undergo various medical check-ups and participate in activities organised for the host families of Vallès Occidental.
The Vacances en Pau programme, promoted by the Delegation of the Polisario Front in Catalonia, has the support of various organisations and municipalities. Its aim is for children from the Sahrawi refugee camps to spend July and August with Catalan families, escaping the harsh climatic conditions of the desert and accessing medical check-ups.
The welcome in Montcada i Reixac is part of a tradition of solidarity with the Sahrawi people that the municipality has maintained for years. The host families, grouped in the Montcada Solidària entity, are the backbone of the programme, providing temporary homes for the children.
The children will remain in the municipality until the end of August, when they will return to the camps. For the host families, the experience creates a bond that is renewed year after year, as demonstrated by the case of the child who has already spent five summers with the same family.
