One year after the naturalisation works, the Ponent Lake in Granollers has multiplied biodiversity and improved water quality thanks to a natural filtration system.
The Ponent Lake in Granollers has undergone a remarkable ecological transformation in its first year as a naturalised space. The interventions carried out in June 2025 have turned the former ornamental pond into a self-regulating aquatic ecosystem, where natural purification has replaced chemical treatments.
According to the Granollers City Council, the new filtration system, based on a bed of gravel and aquatic plants, has allowed the elimination of chemical products to maintain water quality. This has favoured a significant increase in biodiversity around the lake.
A Refuge for Local Fauna and Flora
The space has established itself as a habitat for various species. Among the animals that can already be observed are frogs, dragonflies, butterflies, and herons. Native plants such as willowherb and white water lily have also flourished.
The model followed has been the Can Cabanyes wetland, a local reference in ecological restoration. The result is a balanced ecosystem capable of self-regulating, according to municipal sources.
An Educational and Observational Space
The Ponent Lake has become an educational point of interest for schools and residents. The City Council highlights that the space allows for direct observation of nature and guided visits are expected to be organised in the future.
Citizen collaboration has been key to the proper functioning of the space. Authorities remind that fish, turtles, and other animals should not be released into the lake, nor should food or products be thrown in.
“We must continue to avoid releasing fish, turtles, and other animals into the water, as well as throwing in food or any other type of product,” stated sources from the Granollers City Council.
A Year of Positive Results
The data collected during this year shows a continuous improvement in water quality and an increase in biodiversity. The Ponent Lake is now an example of how the naturalisation of urban spaces can generate environmental and social benefits.
For the residents of Granollers, the lake offers a leisure space and contact with nature just minutes from the centre. Visits are free, and it is recommended to respect the guidelines to preserve the ecosystem's balance.
