The Esparreguera Town Hall has launched its annual campaign against the pine processionary caterpillar, a plague that affects the pines in parks and urban spaces. Last week, the first municipal actions began, focused on the removal of nests and the reinforcement of capture traps.
In the coming weeks, the work will focus on endotherapy, a treatment that will be applied to 60 pines in schools and urban parks in the municipality. This technique involves injecting the phytosanitary product directly into the trunk of the tree, allowing for a more selective approach to combatting the plague with less environmental impact.
The processionary caterpillar is a caterpillar that moves in procession and can cause skin irritations and respiratory problems, especially in children and pets. With this campaign, the council aims to reduce its presence before spring, when the caterpillars descend from the trees.
The Esparreguera Town Hall recommends that residents avoid contact with the caterpillars and notify the Environmental Service if they detect nests in areas not included in the treatment plan. The actions will be carried out over the coming weeks, and it is expected that they will be completed before the caterpillars reach their most active phase.
