From 18 July to 2 August, Viladecans celebrates the Cherry Gastronomic Route with dishes that highlight this local tomato in six restaurants.
Viladecans promotes its star product, the cherry tomato, with a gastronomic route that starts on 18 July and runs until 2 August. Six restaurants in the municipality will participate, offering two dishes each, with the cherry as the main ingredient, as reported by the Gremi d'Hostaleria de Viladecans in collaboration with the City Council.
The initiative was presented in the Sala Fassina of Can Modolell, where chefs Mingo Morilla from Cal Mingo and Alberto Alguacil from Can Martí held a culinary demonstration. The Councillor for Commerce, Rosa Cañisà, highlighted the collaboration between agriculture, local commerce, and restaurants to bring the produce from Viladecans' gardens closer to residents and visitors.
Restaurants and gastronomic proposals featuring Viladecans cherry
The six participating establishments are Can Martí, Mamut Beach Club, El Petit Can Batllori, Vilateca Plats i Platets, Bö, and Cal Mingo. Each has designed two innovative dishes based on locally grown cherry tomatoes.
For example, Cal Mingo will offer a small dish of cherry tomatoes and smoked Arzúa cheese, as well as a cod dish with cherry. Mamut Beach Club will prepare a salad with melon, smoked sardine, and basil mayonnaise, along with another proposal featuring fire-roasted cherry tomatoes and provolone cheese.
Vilateca will present a hummus with beans and salted ricotta, and a dish with Olavidia cheese, considered the “best in the world,” accompanied by anchovies and crispy corn. Can Martí will showcase shredded cod with cherry, red onion, and Kalamata olives, as well as a salad with smoked tomatoes, mint, basil, and peach.
The Bö restaurant will prepare two pizzas with tomato sauce, mozzarella, mushrooms, and cherry, while Can Batllori will offer a salad with watermelon and cheese, and a beef milanesa with confit cherry tomatoes. The restaurants will display a distinctive sign on their doors and mark the dishes featuring Viladecans cherry with an icon.
Fresh local produce and commitment to sustainability
This route is part of the Producte Fresc de Viladecans campaign, which aims to promote the consumption of local and sustainable products. The Viladecans cherry is an elongated tomato, mostly grown in greenhouses, with a stable annual production of around 80,000 kg.
Distribution is carried out in cardboard boxes without plastics, thus committing to waste reduction. The campaign has the cooperation of the Agricultural Cooperative, the Gremi d’Hostaleria, and the Xarxa Comercial to give visibility to producers and promote zero-kilometre food.
Marketing network and access to local products
During the campaign, cherries will be available at the Mercats Municipals, Mercat de Pagès, and fourteen participating greengrocers and establishments. Among them are Cal Delaida, Vila Eco, and Casa Torrens, totaling 22 points of sale that are part of the Producte Fresc de Viladecans network.
The president of the Gremi d’Hostaleria and chef of Cal Mingo, Mingo Morilla, highlighted the pride and affection for this product:
“We value products that are so ours because they are part of our cuisine and culture, and the agricultural area is an essential landscape of the city”. Thus, the gastronomic route becomes an opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy a quality local product and promote the circular economy.
The cherry gastronomic route not only offers a unique culinary experience but also boosts local commerce and recognition of the work of farmers in the Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat. The dishes will remain on the menus of the restaurants for the duration of the tomato season.
Those interested can visit any of the six participating restaurants or purchase cherries at the designated points of sale throughout the summer, taking advantage of one of the jewels of Viladecans' gardens.
