The transformation of Meridiana Avenue from an urban highway to a civic axis is facing its final works on the roadway. The paving of the lanes will take place during the first two weeks of August, affecting public transport.
The urban redevelopment works on Meridiana Avenue in Barcelona are entering their decisive phase. The Barcelona City Council has announced that the paving of the traffic lanes will be carried out during the first fifteen days of August, which will practically complete the roadway. The remaining works, focused on sidewalks, green areas, and urban furniture, will continue until autumn 2026.
According to the council, from August 1 to 7, work will be carried out on the lanes heading into the city. The work will begin at the height of Fabra i Puig promenade and will progress towards Felip II street, ensuring at least one lane of traffic remains open at all times. The night before the work begins, the protective elements currently on the roadway will be removed.
From August 8 to 14, the work will shift to the lanes heading out of the city. In this case, the work will start at Felip II street and move towards Fabra i Puig promenade. Again, on the night of August 7, the construction barriers on that side of the road will be removed.
These works will affect public transport, especially intercity buses, which will make their final stop at Fabra i Puig and will only travel along Meridiana for pass-throughs. The City Council recommends that users check for possible alterations in the lines before travelling.
Prior to this major operation, on Monday, July 27, and Tuesday, July 28, paving of intersections on Meridiana Avenue is taking place. On Monday, work is being done at the intersection of Concepción Arenal and Riera d'Horta streets with Meridiana; on Tuesday, work will be carried out at the intersection of Dublin and Concepción Arenal streets; and on Wednesday, the intersection at Felip II will be addressed.
The works, which began in spring 2025, are progressing according to the planned schedule, with completion expected in autumn 2026. To date, almost all associated services have been executed, and the lighting and traffic signal poles have been installed. Most of the planned vegetation has also been planted.
The transformation of Meridiana aims to convert the former urban highway into a civic and community axis. The new section will feature two lanes for general traffic and one for buses in each direction, a segregated central bike lane, and a significant increase in vegetation. Specifically, around 275 new trees will be planted, and approximately 7,200 square meters of flowerbeds will be gained.
To improve crosswalks and connectivity, the works have created new pedestrian crossings: one on Honduras street, another at the height of Martí Molins street (one of the civic axes of the Sagrera neighbourhood, connecting to Masadas square), another in the Pegàs-Dublin stretch, and another on Jota street. In total, the number of pedestrian crossings in the area will increase from 9 to 15.
Once the paving of the roadway is completed in August, the works will focus on the sidewalks, the installation of urban furniture and playgrounds in the Sagrera node, the execution of flowerbeds and tree planting, the finishing of the photovoltaic pergola, and vertical and horizontal road signage. The City Council expects all these actions to be completed before the end of autumn.
