The Mataró City Council has allocated €418,383 to two improvement projects in over twenty public spaces, including landscaping, accessibility, urban furniture, and the renewal of playground equipment.
The Mataró City Council has completed improvement works in over twenty green spaces in the city, with a total investment of €418,383. The works are part of two distinct projects: one already completed, focused on the 'veïnificació' of eleven squares, and another currently underway that will renew playground equipment in another eleven spaces.
The first project, now finished, has transformed eleven spaces distributed throughout the municipality with the aim of making them more welcoming and promoting community life. The works have included the installation of more versatile urban furniture, the improvement and diversification of plantings—focusing on flowering species—and the creation of new shaded areas.
Among the spaces that have been improved is the Can Xammar square, where the flowerbeds have been repaired and enclosed, and a mixed planting of shrubs and herbaceous plants has been carried out to ensure prolonged flowering. In the Rafael Casanova square, the path between the accesses and the monument has been repaved to improve accessibility, the flowerbed has been enclosed to protect the planting, and a bench has been relocated.
On Marià Ribas i Bertran street, a new rest-viewing area has been created with furniture and tree planting to provide shade, in addition to improving the ditches. The vegetation in the upper area of the Tereses square has been expanded by modifying the flowerbed and planting shrubs.
Other squares included in this project are the 1 d'Octubre square, where the landscaping has been renewed and new planters installed; the Sardana square, with improvements to the pavement and new vegetation; and the Vila square, where the urban furniture has been replaced. Works have also been carried out in the Església square, the República square, the Solidaritat square, and the Pau square.
The second project, currently underway, focuses on renewing playground equipment in eleven green spaces in the city. The planned investment for this section is approximately €200,000, according to municipal sources. The new equipment will replace the current ones, which have shown significant wear, and will be installed in parks such as Camí del Mig, Gatassa, Llàntia, Pla d'en Boet, Riera, Rocafonda, Cerdanyola, Cirera, Peramàs, Vista Alegre, and Urbanització Les Sureres.
The new play areas will include slides, swings, seesaws, and climbing structures, adapted for different ages and with universal accessibility criteria. The council expects the works to be completed before next autumn, coinciding with the start of the school year.
The Councillor for Public Space, Marc Martínez, has highlighted that these actions “respond to community demands and improve the quality of life in the neighbourhoods.” In statements recorded by the City Council, he noted that “we will continue working to ensure that every corner of Mataró is a pleasant and safe place for everyone.”
The total investment of €418,383 is financed with municipal funds and is part of the public space improvement plan 2025-2026. The City Council has reminded that these interventions are in addition to others already carried out in previous years, such as the renovation of the Muralla square or the pedestrianisation of Barcelona street.
Residents of the affected areas have positively evaluated the improvements, especially the creation of new shaded areas and the renewal of furniture. In the Can Xammar square, some residents have noted that “it is now a more pleasant place to sit and chat.”
In the coming weeks, work will continue in the playgrounds, with the expectation that all new equipment will be operational before the end of September. The City Council has informed that during the works, the affected areas will be cordoned off to ensure user safety.
