Nineteen Sahrawi children will spend July and August in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat thanks to the programme promoted by the entity L'Hospitalet amb el Sàhara, with the support of the City Council. The initiative is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The mayor of L'Hospitalet, David Quirós, welcomed the 19 Sahrawi minors participating in the 30th edition of the summer hosting programme this Tuesday. The event, held in the gardens of Can Sumarro, was attended by host families, municipal representatives, and members of the L'Hospitalet amb el Sàhara association.
The children, from the refugee camps in Tindouf (Algeria), will stay in the city during July and August. The main objective is to provide them with a break from the harsh conditions of the desert and to improve their often insufficient diet.
Comprehensive medical check-up and recreational activities
During their stay, the minors receive specialised medical care, including an eye examination to detect visual pathologies. The programme also includes recreational activities and excursions organised by the local entity.
According to the association, accumulated experience shows that children participating in the programme improve their immune capacity against diseases compared to those who have never left the camps.
Municipal commitment since 1990
The City Council of L'Hospitalet has been collaborating with this initiative since 1990, providing institutional support and raising awareness about the situation of Sahrawi refugees. The president of L'Hospitalet amb el Sàhara, Olga Rodríguez, thanked the municipal involvement and the host families.
The representative of the Polisario Front, Salmen Mohamed Salam, highlighted the importance of these programmes for the health and well-being of the minors. The hosting is part of a broader project that includes activities throughout the year.
For the families of L'Hospitalet, hosting a Sahrawi child is an enriching experience. Many repeat year after year, creating bonds that last beyond the summer.
