The collapse of a well at the underground works of the tracks in the Vallbona neighbourhood of Barcelona has caused the disruption of services on the R2 Nord, R2, and R11 lines since yesterday. The incident, which did not cause any injuries, swallowed a large crane and has necessitated the activation of an alternative transport plan that particularly affects residents of Montcada and Reixac.
The Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Clavero, accompanied by the president of Adif, Luis Pedro Marco, appeared this morning at the construction site to reassure the public. Clavero confirmed that Adif technicians are investigating the causes of the collapse and the loss of ground stability, while workers are filling the hole with concrete.
The mayor of Montcada and Reixac, Bartolo Egea, attended the press conference along with the president of the Territorial and Mobility Area, Andreu Iruela, and the councillor for the Nou Barris District of the Barcelona City Council, Francesc Xavier Marcé. Egea expressed his concern for the impact on the municipality's residents, who are the main users of the affected lines.
According to the Secretary of State, information will be updated on Saturday to confirm the exact date for the recovery of rail services. Meanwhile, Renfe has implemented a transport alternative plan to minimise inconvenience to users.
For the R2 Nord and R2 (north section), trains will terminate at the Montcada and Reixac station. Passengers wishing to continue to Barcelona must transfer on foot for about five minutes to the R4 station (Montcada-Manresa). For the R2 Sud and R2 (south section), trains heading to the Airport and Castelldefels will not reach Montcada and Reixac; they will start and finish their service at the Barcelona Sant Andreu station.
The R4 line, which connects Montcada and Reixac with Manresa and Barcelona Sants, continues to operate normally. As for the R11, train services remain from Figueres/Portbou to Granollers Centre, and for the affected section, a direct bus service has been established between Granollers Centre and Barcelona Sant Andreu.
The collapse occurred yesterday afternoon in one of the wells of the underground works, a project aimed at eliminating the level crossing in Vallbona and improving connectivity between the Nou Barris and Montcada and Reixac neighbourhoods. The works, carried out by Adif, have a budget of over 100 million euros and are scheduled for completion in 2028.
The residents of Montcada and Reixac are the most affected by the disruption, as many use the R2 Nord to travel to Barcelona for work or studies. The alternative with a foot transfer poses an inconvenience, although the City Council is working to minimise the disruptions.
