The Mataró City Council has announced that 401 of the 748 regulated surface parking spaces will be exempt from payment throughout August, coinciding with the holiday period.
The Mataró City Council has decided to suspend the blue zone charges in more than half of the regulated spaces during August. The measure, which affects 401 of the 748 regulated surface parking spaces managed by the municipal public company PUMSA, aims to adapt to the reduction in travel and commercial activity typical of the summer period.
According to municipal sources, areas with lower traffic intensity will be free from regulation to "contribute to balancing the needs for turnover with the comfort of the neighbourhood." In contrast, charges will remain in areas with a higher concentration of people and vehicles, especially around the beaches, commercial axes, and municipal markets. The council emphasizes that this measure "facilitates vehicle turnover and ensures better availability of spaces."
The free spaces will be easily identifiable as the parking meters will be out of service and will display informative signs with the date of service resumption. Thus, drivers parking in those streets will not have to pay or obtain a ticket.
In the so-called ‘zone 1’, 237 spaces located on the streets of Tetuan, Fra Luis de León, Catalunya, Francesc Milans, d’Altafulla, Llauder (between Iluro and the Ronda de la República), Camí Ral, Javier Castaños (between Iluro and the Ronda de la República), Sant Cugat (between Iluro and República), and calle de la Unió will be free of charge. In the same zone, 83 spaces will remain charged in the lot between Palmerola and Deu de Gener streets, and on Iluro (between Sant Benet and Camí Ral), Llauder (between Cuba and Iluro), Sant Cugat (between Cuba and Iluro), and Javier Castaños (between Cuba and Iluro).
‘Zone 2’ will be charged in its entirety: the 90 spaces on the avenue of Jaume Recoder and the streets of Cosme Churruca, Lepant, Germans Thos i Codina, and Federico Carlo Gravina. The 174 spaces in ‘zone 3’ will also continue to be charged, in the Can Maitanquis lot and the streets of Jaume Balmes and Damià Campeny.
Finally, the 164 spaces in ‘zone 4’ will be free during August. This includes La Riera, the squares dels Bous and de Espanya, the passage dels Sisternes, the Ronda de Alfons X el Savi, and the streets of Jaume Isern, del Carme, and del Parc.
The decision by the Mataró City Council responds to the seasonal drop in parking demand in August, when many residents go on holiday. This measure has been applied in previous years and aims to balance vehicle turnover in the busier areas with the comfort of residents in the less active areas.
Drivers wishing to park in the areas that remain charged will need to pay the usual fee at the operational parking meters. The rest of the spaces will remain unregulated until September 1, when the service will resume normally.
