On Saturday, August 8, at 7 PM, the Miramar – Centre Cultural de Sitges will host the inauguration of the exhibitions by Agustín Serisuelo and Melchor Balsera, winners of the sculpture and painting competitions.
Next Saturday, August 8, at 7 PM, the Miramar – Centre Cultural de Sitges will be the venue for the inauguration of the exhibitions of the winners of the Pere Jou and Sanvisens competitions of 2025. These are the works of sculptor Agustín Serisuelo, winner of the XXIX Pere Jou Sculpture Competition, and painter Melchor Balsera, winner of the XXXIX Sanvisens Painting Competition. Both exhibitions will be open for viewing until September 6 and September 20 respectively, during the usual hours of the cultural centre.
The Culture Department of the Sitges Town Hall, in collaboration with the Sanvisens and Jou families, organises these awards annually with the aim of promoting artistic talent. Year after year, both the number of participating artists and the quality of the submitted works have increased, consolidating these competitions as key events in the local cultural calendar.
The winning sculpture, titled “S/T”, by Agustín Serisuelo, explores expanded photography, a language in which image and volume engage in dialogue. The pieces, folded and fragmented, abandon two-dimensionality to inhabit space as autonomous objects. On wood or other supports, each fragment becomes memory and reconfigured landscape, transforming photography into an expanding territory and an echo of time that often goes unnoticed.
For his part, Melchor Balsera presents “Construcció de Paisatges”, a pictorial proposal that creates a dreamlike universe where matter and atmosphere converse. Through layers of fiberglass and glazes, the artist evokes experienced landscapes that are suggested rather than shown. The images invite a sensory and subjective experience, constructing an open emotional geography where perception becomes a common territory between the artist and the viewer.
Entry to both exhibitions is free. The visiting hours of the Miramar – Centre Cultural are Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 2 PM and from 5 PM to 8 PM, remaining closed on public holidays. Residents of Sitges and visitors will be able to enjoy these two exhibitions that highlight local and national contemporary art.
The Pere Jou competition, dedicated to sculpture, and the Sanvisens, focused on painting, are two of the most anticipated events by artists from the Garraf region and all of Catalonia. The quality of the works presented this year has been particularly praised by the organisers, who are hopeful that the exhibitions will attract a large audience.
With this initiative, the Sitges Town Hall reaffirms its commitment to culture and support for creators, offering a space for dissemination and recognition for the winners of these prestigious competitions.
