The Mossos d'Esquadra have arrested a 33-year-old man as a presumed co-author of the theft of a gold chain from a woman in the Bellvitge neighbourhood. The arrest took place on July 17, two weeks after the assault.
Officers from the Investigation Unit of the Mossos d'Esquadra station in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat arrested a 33-year-old man on July 17 as a presumed co-author of a crime of robbery with violence and intimidation. He is the second individual involved in the assault that occurred on July 2 in the Bellvitge neighbourhood, when a woman was stripped of a gold chain while walking.
The events occurred around 11:15 am that day, on Avenida América in L'Hospitalet. A man ripped the chain from the victim's neck and fled. Several witnesses began a chase that continued to the park at the end of Rambla Marina.
During the chase, a second individual brandished a knife and threatened one of the witnesses to stop following the thief. The threat allowed both suspects to escape. As a result, the witness fell to the ground and suffered injuries to his knee and leg.
The initial police investigations led to the identification of the home where the suspects had taken refuge, on the same Rambla Marina in L'Hospitalet, and the identification of its occupants. On that same day, the Mossos arrested the presumed material author of the robbery, a 27-year-old man with a criminal record. The investigation remained open to locate the second suspect.
The actions taken, along with the information gathered during the police proceedings, allowed the identification of the second suspect as the person who had brandished the knife. Finally, on July 17, the agents located and arrested him. Both detainees were brought before the duty investigating court in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat.
The swift action of the Mossos and the cooperation of the witnesses were key to clarifying the events and preventing the suspects from evading justice. The victim, a resident of Bellvitge, was able to recover the gold chain, although it has not been specified whether it was returned in full.
The case has raised concerns among local residents, who are calling for a greater police presence to prevent such incidents. From the L'Hospitalet station, the Mossos have assured that they maintain surveillance in the area and remind the importance of reporting any criminal acts.
Robbery with violence is a crime punishable by prison sentences of two to five years, according to the Penal Code. The investigation remains open to determine whether the detainees are linked to other similar incidents in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
