Rubí is adding a new space to its municipal network of climate shelters. The Mestre Martí Tauler Library will open its doors this summer as a climate-controlled refuge for residents to shield themselves from high temperatures during the hottest hours.
The Rubí City Council has confirmed that the building, located in the city centre, will operate as a climate shelter from Monday to Friday in two time slots: from 10 am to 2 pm and from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm. This schedule is broader than that of the library itself, which maintains its usual summer service from Monday to Thursday from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm and on Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm.
In this way, although library services may not be operational during some time slots, citizens will be able to access the building to protect themselves from the heat and rest in an environment with favourable conditions.
With this addition, the council strengthens Rubí's network of climate shelters, consisting of indoor and outdoor spaces distributed across various neighbourhoods. These places are specifically designed to protect the most vulnerable groups to high temperatures, such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses, although they are open to the entire population.
Climate shelters provide an accessible place to rest, hydrate, and regain thermal comfort during the hottest hours of the day. Their aim is to reduce the impact of extreme temperatures on health and offer safe alternatives when the heat is intense.
This initiative comes in the context of increasingly hot summers, with more frequent and intense heatwaves in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. Rubí already had other spaces of this kind, and the addition of the library expands the offer in a central and well-connected area.
For the residents of Rubí, this new shelter represents an additional resource to cope with extreme heat days, especially for those who do not have air conditioning at home or who spend many hours outdoors. The proximity to the centre and the extended hours facilitate its use throughout the entire working day.

With this measure, Rubí takes another step in its strategy for climate change adaptation and in protecting the health of its citizens during the hottest months of the year. The expectation is that the shelter will be operational throughout the summer, as long as weather conditions require it.
