A mobile unit from the Blood and Tissue Bank will be set up at the Joan Tarrida space to encourage donations. The goal is to maintain reserves, which require 1,000 daily donations.
On Tuesday, August 4, from 9 AM to 1 PM, the Joan Tarrida space in Sitges (Carrer Joan Tarrida, 10) will host a new blood and plasma donation campaign organised by the Blood and Tissue Bank. The aim is to reinforce the bank's reserves, which need around 1,000 daily donations to ensure hospital treatments.
Anyone healthy aged between 18 and 70 who weighs more than 50 kilos can participate, even if they are taking some of the most common medications. There is no need to fast, and it is essential to bring an official identification document.
Prior reservation and two donation modalities
The Blood and Tissue Bank recommends booking an appointment in advance through its website. On this occasion, two different forms must be used depending on whether one wants to donate blood or plasma. For blood, the specific form is available on the bank's website; for plasma, there is another registration link. It is also possible to go directly to the site, as long as there are free slots at that time.
Plasma donation is becoming increasingly important, as it cannot be manufactured and is vital for obtaining immunoglobulins, essential proteins for treating autoimmune diseases and immune system problems. Plasma can be donated more frequently than blood: a minimum of fifteen days must be waited between donations, while for blood the minimum is three months.
Balance of the previous campaign
In the last campaign, held in July, 58 people donated blood, 3 of whom were first-time donors. Thanks to these donations, 174 patients were able to benefit. However, the bank insists that the pace must be maintained because platelets expire after five days.
As for plasma, the Blood and Tissue Bank has the challenge of achieving 65,000 annual donations to ensure treatments for thousands of patients with immune issues. This figure highlights the need for regular donations throughout the year.
Men can donate blood four times a year and women three times a year. In Sitges, the campaign on August 4 is an opportunity for residents to contribute to a life-saving cause, with the convenience of having the donation point just a few minutes from home.
